Original cover of Ephesians: The Crown Jewel of the Epistles of Paul

To The Ephesians

Chapter 1

1 – Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the holy ones1, which are at Ephesus2, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus3.

2 – Grace and peace to you from God our Father,4 and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 – Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with all spiritual5 blessings in heaven6.

4 – Just as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation7 of the world, we should be holy and without blemish8 before Him in love.

5 – He predestined9 us to sonship10 unto Himself by Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will,

6 – to the glorious praise of His grace, that endowed11 us with grace in the Beloved,

7 – in whom we possess redemption through His blood, the release12 from trespasses13, according to the riches of his grace,

8 – which abounds to us in all wisdom and insight14.

9 – He has made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure, which He has set forth in Him15,

10 – overseeing16 the fullness of times, to bring together all things in Christ, both which are in Heaven and which are in Earth, in Him –

11 – in whom also we have obtained an inheritance17, having been appointed18 according to the plan of Him who works all things after the counsel of His own will,

12 – that we should be to the praise of His glory, who first had confidence19 in Christ –

13 – in whom you also, when you heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom, you also believing, were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise20,

14 – which is the first installment21 of our inheritance, as a ransom payment for the purchased possession22, unto the praise of His glory.

15 – Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the holy ones23,

16 – cease not to give thanks for you, making petition for you in my prayers24,

17 – that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father25 of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge Him26 –

18 – the eyes of your understanding being enlightened to know the confidence27 of His calling,28 and what is the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the holy ones29,

19 – and what is the exceeding greatness of His power30 to us who believe, according to the working power of His mighty strength,

20 – which he worked31 in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand32 in the heavens,

21 – far above all principality, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in the one to come33,

22 – and has placed all things under His feet, and appointed Him the head over all the church34,

23 – who is his body35, the fullness36 of Him that fills all in all.

Chapter 2

1 – But you were dead in your trespasses and sins37,

2 – according to that which you once walked in, after the course of this world38 according to the ruler, the authority of the atmosphere39, the spirit40 that now works in the sons of disobedience.

3 – In this we also all conducted ourselves in the desire of our flesh, fulfilling the will of the flesh41 and of the imagination, and were by nature children of wrath even as others.

4 – But God who is rich in mercy through His abundant love42 with which He has loved us,

5 – even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together43 with Christ – by grace you are saved –

6 – and has raised us up together, and has made us sit together in the heavens44 in

Christ Jesus,

7 – so that throughout the ages to come45 He might demonstrate the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness towards us by Christ Jesus.

8 – For by grace46 you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves47 – it is the gift of God,

9 – not of works, so that none may boast48.

10 – For we are His workmanship49, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God ordained that we should walk in them.

11 – For this reason remember that you were once Gentiles in the flesh50, called uncircumcised by those called circumcised in the flesh made by hands51.

12 – Because at that time52 you were separated from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise53, having no hope and without God in this world54.

13 – But now in Christ Jesus, you who were once far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ55.

14 – For He is our Peace, who has made both of us one, and dissolved the enmity, the middle wall of partition56, in His flesh,

15 – abolishing the Law of commandments in ordinances57, so that in Himself He created of the two58 one new man59, making peace,

16 – and completely exchanged60 both to God in one body through the cross, destroying the enmity61 in Himself,

17 – and came proclaiming peace62 to you that were far away and those that were near63.

18 – For through Him we are both brought by one Spirit64 to the Father.

19 – Now then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but are fellow citizens65, holy ones, and of the house of God,

20 – built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets – Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone66,

21 – in whom the whole building fitted together grows67 into a holy temple68 in the Lord,

22 – in whom also you are built together69 into a habitation of God by the Spirit.

Chapter 3

1 – For this reason, I, Paul, the servant of Jesus Christ for the sake of you Gentiles,

2 – surely you have heard of the grace of God given to me to administer70 to you,

3 – that by revelation He made known to me the mystery as I have briefly written71.

4 – Thus reading72 will enable you to perceive73 my understanding74 in the mystery of Christ.

5 – In other generations it was not made known to the sons of men as it is now revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets,

6 – that the Gentiles75 should be co-inheritors and of the same body, and joint partakers of the promise in Christ76 through the gospel,

7 – of which I have become a minister77 according to the gift of the grace78 of God given

to me according to the mighty79 working of His power.

8 – To me, who am less than the least of all the holy ones, is this grace given, to announce to the Gentiles the good news of the unfathomable riches of Christ80,

9 – and to give light to all of the mystery of the fellowship81, which has been hidden from the ages in God, who created everything through Jesus Christ,

10 – in order to now make known through the church the manifold wisdom of God to rulers and authorities in the heavens82,

11 – according to the plan83 of the ages, which was made in Christ Jesus our Lord,

12 – in whom we have boldness84 and access85 by confidence86 through His faith87,

13 – on which account you should not lose heart by my tribulation for you88, which is your glory.

14 – For this favor89, I bow my knee to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15 – from whom the whole family in Heaven and on Earth are named90,

16 – so that He would grant you according to the riches of His glory strengthening91

power by His Spirit in the inner man,

17 – that Christ may dwell in your heart by faith92, being rooted and grounded93 in love.

18 – So that you may have strength94 to lay hold of, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

19 – and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge so that you may be filled95

with all the fullness of God.

20 – Now to him who has the power to do super-abundantly above all that we think or ask according, to the power96 that works in us,

21 – unto Him be glory in the church by Jesus Christ, throughout every generation97 forever and forever, amen!

Chapter 4

1 – I call98 to you myself, as the prisoner of the Lord, to walk worthy of the calling99 to which you are called,

2 – with all humility100 and meekness – with longsuffering forbearing one another in love.

3 – Giving diligence101 to keep the oneness of the Spirit102 in the bond of peace,

4 – as one body and one Spirit, just as you are called into one expectation of your calling.

5 – One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 – one God and Father of all, who is upon all, and through all, and in all.

7 – And to each of us is given grace, according the measure of the gift of Christ103,

8 – on which account He said, “Ascending up on high, He led captivity104 captive, and gave gifts105 unto men106.”

9 – Now that He is ascended, is it not He that also went down first into the lower parts of the earth107?

10 – He that descended is also He who ascended up above all the heavens, so that He might fill all,

11 – and He gave the apostles108, and the prophets, and the evangelists, and the pastors, and teachers,

12 – for the perfecting109 of the holy ones to work a ministry110 to the building up of the body of Christ –

13 – until we all come to the oneness of faith and the full knowledge111 of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, to the measure of the maturity112 of the fullness of Christ113,

14 – so that we are no longer children tossed by the waves and carried about with every wind114 of doctrine by the trickery115 of men and craft by which deceivers116 mislead.

15 – But speaking the truth in love117, we may grow up into Christ in all things who is Himself the Head,

16 – from whom the whole body118 is joined and knitted together by every ligament that supplies support, so that each individual part energetically contributing its measure of supply for the growth of the body as it builds itself up in love.119.

17 – This I say then, and testify in the Lord: you shall no longer walk as also the Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind120,

18 – having their thoughts darkened, strangers from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the callousness121 of their heart –

19 – who themselves have lost all sensitivity are given over122 to sexual immorality123, to every kind of uncleanness124, with a desire for more125.

20 – But you have not learned this from Christ126,

21 – if you have heard Him and been taught by Him as the truth is in Jesus.

22 – You shall lay aside127, concerning128 the former behavior, the old man,129 which is corrupt according to deceitful desires,

23 – and let your mind be renewed by the Spirit.130.

24 – And be endued131 with the new man132 which is created after God in righteousness and true holiness133.

25 – For this reason, lay aside lying, speak the truth134 everyone with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

26 – Be angry and sin not – let not the sun go down on your anger,

27 – and give no place to the devil135.

28 – The thief136 must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing good work with his own hands so that he may have something to share with the needy.

29 – Do not allow a bad word to come out of your mouth, but instead that which is good to serve, to edify the hearer that grace may be supplied137.

30 – And do not grieve138 the Holy Spirit139 of God, by whom you are sealed unto the day of redemption.

31 – Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, yelling, and slander be lifted140 from you, along with all wickedness.

32 – But having kindness to one another, being tenderhearted, forgiving one another even also as God through Christ has forgiven you141.

Chapter 5

1 – Be then imitators142 of God as loving children,

2 – and walk in love, even as also Christ loved us143 and gave himself over for us, an offering and sacrifice to God as a sweet-smelling fragrance.

3 – But fornication and impurity144 of any kind, or covetousness145, shall not be named once among you as true holy ones.

4 – Also, obscenity146 and foolish talking or joking, which is entirely out of place, but instead thanksgiving147.

5 – Indeed you recognize148 and know149 this: that all fornicators, or impure, or a covetous one, who is an idolater, have no inheritance150 in the Kingdom of Christ and God.

6 – Let none deceive you151 with vain words, because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7 – Become not then their co –inheritors152.

8 – Indeed you were once darkness, but now light153 in the Lord – walk as children of light154 –

9 – for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness155, and truth,

10 – proving what is pleasing to the Lord.

11 – And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove it156.

12 – For it is shameful to speak of the things they do in secret.

13 – And all things being exposed by the light are made manifest.

14 – For everything that reveals is light, therefore say, “wake up, oh sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you157.”

15 – Therefore, watch by what means158 you walk accurately159, not as unwise but as wise,

16 – redeeming the time, for the day is evil.

17 – For this reason, do not be foolish, but understand the will of the Lord.

18 – And be not intoxicated with wine160, as one unsaved161, but be continually162 filled with the Spirit163,

19 – speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs164, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

20 – giving thanks165 at all times for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

21 – being submitted one to another in fear of God166.

22 – Wives be in submission167 to your own husbands as to the Lord168,

23 – because the man is the head of the woman, even as also Christ is the Head of His church, the savior of the body169.

24 – But even as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives to their own husbands in everything170.

25 – Husbands love your wives, even as also Christ loves the church and delivered himself over for her171,

26 – so that it may be sanctified and cleansed with the washing of the water by the word172.

27 – So that he might present to Himself a glorious church173, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 – So also the men owe it to love their wives as their own body – he who loves his wife loves himself174.

29 – For no one ever hated his flesh, but nourished and cherished her175, even as also the Lord the church.

30 – For we are members of His body,

31 – of his flesh and of his bones, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one”176.

32 – This is a great mystery, but I speak as to Christ and to the church177.

33 – Yet still also, everyone should love his wife as himself, and the wife should reverence her husband.

Footnotes

Chapter 6

1 – Children, obey your parents178 in the Lord, for this is righteous179.

2 – Honor your father and your mother180 – this is the first commandment with promise181: 3 – “So that it will be well for you, and you shall exist a long time upon the land.”

4 – And fathers, provoke not your children, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction182 of the Lord.

5 – Servants, obey your masters183 according to the flesh with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart as to Christ.

6 – Not just with a show184 as a man pleaser, but as servants of Christ doing the will of God from the soul.

7 – Serve with good will as to the Lord and not men,

8 – knowing that everyone who shall do good, the same shall receive of the Lord, whether servant or free.

9 – Also, masters, do the same to them – restrain from threatening, knowing also that your Master is in Heaven, and He is no respector of persons.

10 – Finally, be powerful185 in the Lord, and in the strength of His manifest power186.

11 – Be endued187 with the whole armor of God188 so that you can stand against the craft of the Devil189,

12 – because we are not wrestling190 against flesh and blood, but against the principalities191, against the authorities, against the ruler of this world, the darkness of this age192, against the spiritual iniquity in the heavens.

13 – Now take up the whole armor of God, that you may have the ability to stand in the time of evil, and having conquered193 all, stand.

14 – Stand then, having your loins girded with truth, and endued with the breastplate194 of righteousness.

15 – And bind your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace195.

16 – In everything taking up the shield of faith196, with which you will be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked197.

17 – And receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the proclamation of God’s Word198.

18 – Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer199 and petition, and through it stay alert with all persistence and intercession for all the saints,

19 – and on my behalf that a word200 may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, by boldly making known the mystery of the gospel –

20 – on behalf of which I am an ambassador in bonds, that in it I may speak boldly even as I ought to speak.

21 – But that you may also know what I do, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, shall make known everything to you,

22 – whom I will send to you so that you may know how we are doing and encourage your heart.

23 – Peace to the brethren, and love with faith from Father God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24 – Grace201 to all who sincerely202 love our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
